National IPR policy to promote creativity, innovation: DIPP

The National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) policy announced by the government will help promote creativity and innovation in the country, a senior official said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Joint Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Rajiv Aggarwal said the government is making an ecosystem to promote both these things.

“India has just come out with the National IPR policy. The slogan or the entire bedrock of that policy rests on creativity and innovation. We talk of a creative and innovative India,” Mr. Aggarwal said at a function in New Delhi.

Talking about ‘jugaad’ or ‘frugal innovation’, he said these are important, but not the only solution as “we have to think beyond and go further.”

In May, the government announced the policy to incentivise entrepreneurship and curb manufacturing and sale of counterfeits.

The policy, with the tagline ‘Creative India: Innovative India’, also calls for updating various intellectual property laws, including the Indian Cinematography Act, to remove anomalies and inconsistencies in consultation with stakeholders.
