Expressing deep shock at the death of Jyoti Basu, Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) State secretary M.Y. Tarigami on Sunday said the country had lost a towering personality.

In a statement, Mr. Tarigami said: “The country has lost a towering personality known for his commitment to the cause of human emancipation. A veteran and inspiring leader as he was will be remembered for times to come by the people. He stood by the toiling people all along his life, which earned him a respect and confidence which rarely any other leader enjoyed in the country. In whatever capacity he worked, his contribution has been always unparalleled. He was a front rank leader fighting for secular values and democratic advancement of our society.”

Mr. Basu remained deeply concerned over the sufferings of the people of Kashmir and consistently advocated a political solution to the problems of Jammu and Kashmir.

“He has been inspiring us to work steadily for the oppressed and downtrodden. We join millions in paying our revolutionary homage to the memory of this legendary leader of our times,” Mr. Tarigami said.
