Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Jammu on April 19, his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the swearing-in of the Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party-BJP government.

To address convocation

Official sources said the Prime Minister would address the convocation function of the Jammu-based Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), besides meeting BJP workers in the State unit and attending one or two more official engagements, including a visit to a local hospital.

The visit assumes significance in the backdrop of the fact that Prime Minister Modi will be addressing a university convocation in Jammu, while there is student unrest on the campus of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar over the question of hoisting the national flag there.

Unrest in BJP

There has been unrest within the BJP over the action taken by the local police (under the jurisdiction of the BJP-PDP State government) on non-local students who fought with another group inside the campus and hoisted the national flag after a T20 match between India and West Indies.
