Narendra Modi asks scientists to spend time among children

This would accelerate the spread of science in society, the Prime Minister said at the 105th Indian Science Congress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday requested that all of India’s scientists spend 100 hours with 100 children every year. This would accelerate the spread of science in society, he said at the 105th Indian Science Congress.

Speaking to students, teachers, scientists and researchers at the Manipur University here, he said the term ‘research and development’ should become ‘research on development’ in the context of India.

“We have to be ready in implementing technologies vital for the growth and prosperity of the nation. Technology will allow far greater penetration of services such as education, healthcare, and banking to our citizens,” Mr. Modi said.

The Prime Minister said the government was committed to increasing the share of non-fossil fuel based capacity in the electricity mix above 40% by 2030. Technology, he said, will allow far greater penetration of services such as education, health care and banking to citizens.

“It is for a better tomorrow that Manipur is hosting the second Indian Science Congress for the second time in 100 years in the NE region,” Mr. Modi said. Facilities of science and technology will be extended to all districts of the NE, he promised and pointed out that the Centre is paying special attention to the bamboo, aromatic and medicinal plants which are abundant in the region, he .

The CSIR has developed a machine which would enable the people to test the quality of milk within seconds. “Five years ahead of the WHO target India shall eliminate TB from the country in 2025,” he said.

Children are suffering from malnutrition and other diseases, he said and sought suggestions from the scientists in the national nutrition mission. He urged the scientists to work from lab to land to help the government usher in a new India by 2022.

The Science Congress registered a lukewarm response this year.
