Muslim delegation meets PM, hails his call on reforms

Modi urges community leaders to take the lead in resolving triple talaq issue

A delegation of prominent people from the Muslim community, led by the Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Hind called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi who, among other issues, urged community leaders to take the lead in initiating reforms on the triple talaq issue and not allow the issue to be politicised.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was present at the meeting with JUH leaders, including its general secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani. Welcoming the delegation, Prime Minister Modi said that the Indian democracy’s greatest strength was harmony and amity ( Mel Milaap ).

According to an official release, he also said that India “must not be allowed to fall victim to the rising global tide of extremism”.

Members of the delegation included Maulana Qari Syed Mohammad Usma Mansurpuri, president of the JUH, Dr. Zahir I. Kazi, president of the Anjuman-i-Islam, Professor Khtarul Wasey and Maulana Badruddin Ajmal.

Satisfied with meeting

Speaking to The Hindu after the meet, Maulana Madani said that the delegation was satisfied with its meeting with Prime Minister Modi, and especially appreciated his words on not politicising the issue of triple talaq and making it a community initiative. “We appreciated this stand of the Prime Minister,” he said.

The delegation also expressed the view that terrorism was a “major challenge” and added that it was “the Muslim community’s responsibility that under no circumstances should anyone compromise the nation’s security or well being.”

The delegation also spoke on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and said that only Prime Minister Modi could give the necessary push to resolve the issue.
