The 11-day-old agitation of plantation workers in Munnar took a dramatic turn on Thursday with a woman plantation worker attempting self-immolation.

The woman, who took the extreme step by dousing herself with kerosene, was identified as Samudrakkani, 42, of Kanan Devan Hills Plantation’s Lakshmi South Estate.

Fellow workers intervened on time to prevent Samudrakkani from setting herself on fire.

Eight arrested

Meanwhile, the Munnar police arrested eight persons associated with trade unions for attacking two activists of Penkal Otrumai, the women workers collective.

The women, Muruga Selvi and Kaliyamma, who were injured in the attack were hospitalised.
