MPs worry over missing kin

April 28, 2015 02:30 am | Updated April 02, 2016 06:42 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Even as hundreds of families await news about their kin who have been missing since Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal, and thousands await evacuation, a few MPs on Monday raised the issue of not having heard from their family members who were in the Himalayan nation.

MP from Tehri, Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah, told the House that she had been unable to get in touch with her brother in Nepal.

Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party pointed a finger at the Embassy of India in Nepal for not “showing response” to his party colleague Naresh Agarwal’s calls. Mr. Agarwal was looking out for his nephews who were in Nepal. While listing the efforts of the U.P. government to evacuate people from Nepal using buses, he said the Indian Embassy in Nepal was not as “sensitive” as the government of India has been. He said despite several calls to the Embassy, there was little done to help trace them.

Efforts drew support

India’s efforts to help Nepal in its hour of crisis drew all-round support and appreciation in both the houses of Parliament on Monday. Members of the Lok Sabha decided to donate a month’s salary towards the relief effort even as Rajya Sabha MPs said they should be allowed to use their MPLADS funds for helping Nepal.
