With many new MPs unable to get possession of their allotted houses, Speaker Meira Kumar has called for a joint meeting of the Urban Development Ministry and the Lok Sabha Housing Committee Chairman to sort out the issue.
There are more than 50 newly-elected MPs who have not been able to take possession of their houses even after seven months of government formation.
Asked about the Speaker’s summon, Lok Sabha Housing Committee Chairman JP Aggarwal said, “Yes, I was called by the Speaker as she is concerned about the MPs not being able to move to their allotted houses.”
The Speaker has now called for a meeting of the Urban Development Minister and Housing Committee Chairman.
Aggarwal said the Housing Committee has allotted houses to all MPs.” The allotment process is complete as the committee has issued allotment orders to all newly-elected MPs. But the problem is that many ex-MPs have not yet vacated their houses”.
Many MPs are staying in ITDC run hotels in Delhi as their allotted houses are yet to be vacated by the previous occupants. In a few cases, the renovation work is yet to be completed.
The Directorate of Estate, which is responsible for taking possession of houses after eviction of illegal occupants, has issued eviction notices to all ex-MPs.
“We have repeatedly issued notices to ex-MPs to vacate their houses. While all of them are now paying market rents for failing to vacate in the prescribed period, some have agreed to vacate soon,” a senior Directorate official said.
