Over 200 trains were affected across the country on Monday due to the Bharat Bandh called by the opposition parties against fuel price hike.
The Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express, the Howrah-Haridwar Kumbh Express, the Delhi-Rohtak Express, the Ferozpur-Hosiarpur Express and the Khemkaran-Amritsar Express were among the 225 express and passenger trains that were affected.
While some trains were cancelled, many were short terminated and regulated due to the bandh.
“Besides cancellation, we have rescheduled and diverted many trains keeping in mind the situation,” a senior Railway Ministry official said.
Eastern Railway, South Central Railway, Northeast Frontier Railway and East Coast Railway were among the worst affected zones during the bandh.
According to South Eastern Railway sources, bandh supporters blockaded traffic at 24 places in West Bengal and Orissa resulting in short-termination and cancellation of trains.
They said nine trains, including the Howrah-Mumbai Gitanjali Express and the Tata-Howrah Steel Express were short-terminated at various stations.
Altogether 10 trains, including the Howrah-Mumbai Duronto Express, have been cancelled, while another 10 trains have been rescheduled.
EMU services in the Howrah-Kharagpur, the Howrah-Midnapore and the Howrah-Amta sections were also affected with 28 pairs of trains cancelled and three short-terminated at Panskura, Mechheda and Kharagpur.
The Howrah-Ahmedabad Express, the Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express, the Jnaneswari Express and the Howrah-Mumbai Mail (via Nagpur) left Howrah, while the Chennai-Howrah Mail, the Puri-Howrah Express, the Kanyakumari-Howrah Express and the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express arrived at Howrah before the bandh began at 6 am.
