The government is considering a GPS-enabled plan for recording biometric attendance of MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) workers, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.
“The Ministry is considering rolling out a GPS-enabled plan of biometric attendance for Mahatma Gandhi NREGA workers and a policy in this regard is under consideration,” Minister of State for Rural Development Pradeep Jain Aditya said in a written reply.
With a view to improving maintenance of records under NREGA, States have been asked to deploy technical and non-technical hands at all levels.
A web-enabled management information system (MIS) has also been made operational which places all critical parameters such as job cards, muster rolls, wage payments, number of days of employment provided and works under execution online for monitoring and easy access of information by the public, he said.
Mr. Aditya said wage disbursement to MNREGA workers through bank or post office accounts has been made mandatory to ensure transparency in disbursement of wages.
