More suburban train services

It is good news for people who use local trains in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, as Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday announced 137 additional services in the suburban train network.

While presenting this year's Railway budget, Mr. Trivedi said that with a view to further enhancing the carrying capacity of the suburban services, additional services were being introduced in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

75 for Mumbai

There would be 75 new services in Mumbai, 18 in Chennai and 44 in Kolkata, he said.

New suburban services for Kolkata include Sealdah-Ranaghat, Ranaghat-Naihati, Ranaghat-Shantipur, Ranaghat-Krishnanagar, Ranaghat-Gede, Ranaghat-Bangaon, Bangaon- Barasat, Barasat-Hasnabad, Bandel-Barddhaman, Bandel-Howrah and Mecheda-Degha.

He also proposed to introduce 50 new services in the Kolkata Metro in the coming year.

Additional suburban services proposed for Mumbai include Churchgate-Virar, Virar-Dahanu Road, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Kalyan-Kasara and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Kalyan—Karjat sections, Harbour and Trans-Harbour line.

In Chennai area, it is proposed to run 18 additional services on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram, Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu, Chennai Beach-Avadi, Chennai Beach-Tiruttani, Chennai Beach-Gummiidipundi/Sullurupetta and Chennai Beach-Velachery sections, Mr. Trivedi said.
