Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Teachers Day address to children on September 5 set a “new broadcast TV record” with television rating points (TRPs) of news channels jumping by 463 per cent, shows an analysis of data collected by the Television Audience Measurement (TAM) system.

The address from New Delhi and interaction with children gathered in select cities across the country was telecast and webcast live. The Union Human Resource Development Ministry had sent out a directive to the State governments to ensure that all schools made arrangements for showing the live telecast or webcast to students from Classes I to XII. Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said over 9 crore children in 8.5 lakh schools watched the address live.

The TRP analysis by media managers estimates that the two-hour programme had 2.14 crore viewers across all news channels. This is 1.76 crore more than the average for the previous four weeks for the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. slot, which is not prime time.
