Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee share a common trait of never apologising to the public, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India ( Marxist) Biman Bose said here on Saturday, adding that Mr. Modi’s rise to power will spell disaster for the country.
“Even if he had no role in the riots, the people of Gujarat were killed…. If his opinion is that he will not seek an apology as Muslims were killed then such a person will bring disaster for the country,” Mr. Bose, who is also member of the politbureau of the CPI (M), told journalists at a press conference.
Stating that if a person who does not seek apology becomes the prime minister of a country like India that comprises people of different religions, sect, and languages, he can neither keep the people united nor administer the country.
“If Mr Modi becomes the prime minister it will not be good for the country,” Mr. Bose said, adding that he had visited Ahmedabad after the riots and had seen the plight of those residing in the refuge camps then.
Asked about the prospects of the BJP in the State, the CPI(M) leader admitted that compared to the previous elections the party is contesting the polls in a more planned manner and different outfits associated with the party is also campaigning for it.
Mr. Bose, however refused to admit that the rise of the BJP will improve the chances of the Left parties in the State. “We are not doing research about the division of votes but appealing to our cadres to connect with the people,” he said.
Mr. Bose however, accused the Trinamool Congress of providing the BJP a ground in the State. “Do not forget that it is the Trinamool Congress that brought the BJP to the State,” he said.
On the recent comments made by Narendra Modi to a Bengali newspaper where he had been reportedly soft on the Trinamool Congress, Mr. Bose said that comments made by Mr. Modi and other senior leaders of BJP were an indication that the party was seeking support of the Trinamool Congress.
“The way Trinamool Congress is moving towards the BJP and the BJP is moving towards the Trinamool Congress, there may be a game being played between the two,” he said, adding that there has been adjustment between the parties on some seats.
