The Bharatiya Janata Party swept not only the 2014 general election but the social media as well.
As the curtain was brought down on the one of the most bitterly fought elections in the country, Twitter and Facebook were abuzz with tweets and posts about the BJP’s thumping win. Social media has been at the forefront of this election with a lot of candidates and parties active on these forums.
On Friday, the trending topics on Twitter were dominated by the results, with nearly all of them in support of Narendra Modi and the BJP.
#CongratsNaMo was leading the trend, followed by #Modiheadsto7RCR, #ThankYouIndia, #IMODIfiedIndia and #Mission 272, among others.
Posts such as ‘Ab ki baar Modi sarkaar [this time it’ll be a Modi government]’ — the BJP’s election message — filled Facebook timelines.
When his victory seemed imminent, Narendra Modi tweeted: “India has won! Bharat ki Vijay. Ache din ane wale hai [good days are ahead].”
Interestingly, in the 24 hours ended 5.30 p.m. Friday, the total number of election-related tweets stood at a whooping 1.56 million. Moreover, the top 10 election-related terms on the microblogging site during the period were Narendra Modi, followed by AAP, BJP, Varanasi, #AlwaysWithCongress, #AbkiBaar300Parr.
Internet search giant Google too made its presence felt, coming up with a special Doodle on its India home page to mark the day. The doodle, featuring the indelible ink painted on the index finger, when clicked, enabled users to follow counting live.
