Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday quit the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat after choosing to retain Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh decided to keep Azamgarh and resign from his traditional stronghold of Mainpuri.

While rules permit politicians to contest more than one seat, they can represent only one constituency in the Lok Sabha and will have to resign from the other within a fortnight of results.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the newly inducted Union Ministers of State Nirmala Sitharaman and Prakash Javdekar will be brought into Parliament from Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh against nine casual vacancies that have arisen in the Rajya Sabha.

On Wednesday, the Election Commission announced elections to the nine casual vacancies. Polling, if necessary, would be held on June 19.
