A day after the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi slammed the Sheila Dikshit government for having failed to provide drinking water to the residents despite being in power for the past 15 years, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday charged the Gujarat Chief Minister with ‘resorting to lies and deliberately negating the development witnessed in Delhi over the last 15 years’.

Lauding the performance of the Congress Government in the Capital at an election rally at Shastri Park here, Ms. Gandhi said the city has witnessed an unprecedented development since 1998 when the Congress came to power in Delhi, but the opposition was ‘knowingly ignoring’ it. Ms. Gandhi, however, did not directly name either Modi or BJP, which she referred to as ‘main opposition party’.

“I am also a resident of Delhi. All of us are witness to the development that has happened over the past 15 years. What is visible to open eyes does not require proof. Everybody is witnessing and enjoying the fruits of development. Those who can’t see it have knowingly chosen to remain blindfolded,” Ms. Gandhi said during her speech in chaste Hindi, using several maxims popular in North India.

Slamming the Gujarat Chief minister for targeting the Congress leadership, the UPA chairperson also cautioned the people against ‘some persons who were trying to spread poison through their narrow ideology’.
