Results of two opinion polls show a surge in Mr. Modi’s popularity, the BJP leader said

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday accepted that its prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi is more popular than the party itself. Commenting on the projections made by recent opinion polls, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley said the results of at least two such polls show a surge in Mr. Modi’s popularity and acceptability as prime minister after the 2014 general elections.

“The most significant factor in these opinion polls has been that Narendra Modi's acceptability as prime ministerial candidate is about 15 to 20 per cent higher than the BJP vote in each state. His ability to pull the party up in strong areas and contribute to its vote percentage in the non-strong areas is evident. How else can we justify the projected 17 per cent vote share in Tamil Nadu and 25 per cent in Odisha,” he said in a statement.

The BJP leader said even though he does not give much credence to opinion polls and is not “a great believer in the accuracy of the seat projections”; the indicators cannot be overlooked as the polls at this stage are trying to catch the trend of the current level of the public opinion.

He ruled out the possibility of a Third Front and said smaller parties cobbling together a group can never provide a stable Government. Indicating the regrouping of NDA allies, Mr. Jaitley said: “A logical conclusion is that a stable Government can only be the BJP led Government and the NDA. In terms of these indications, it should lead to a Government of greater NDA which Atalji [former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee] had formed. A number of parties who constituted the greater NDA are poised to do well. The greater NDA should in addition to the existing NDA parties comprise of regional parties which occupy the non-Congress space in their States.”

The opinion polls results were however trashed by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari. He was dismissive of the trends that show BJP having an edge over the Congress and other parties.

"After demolishing all surveys and analyses, when results of 2014 Lok Sabha elections come, you'll find that with God's grace and support of people those who have given Prime Ministers to the country are back in power and those who have given Prime Ministerial candidates are again back in their permanent place, the Opposition," Mr. Tewari told reporters here.

Attacking Mr. Modi, he said the BJP government in Gujarat worked only for a few capitalists.

"If you analyse the administration in what is called the Gujarat model, five crore Gujaratis have lagged behind while 5-6 capitalists have progressed. So if the farmers are protesting there, they are doing the right thing," he said.

"Jaitly’s statement reminds me days of Jansangh when Atal Bihari Vajpayee
was more popular than party but party failed to perform well election
after election. It became stronger only after adopting Hindutwa agenda.
You are trying again same tactics..

By choosing NAMO as Prime Ministerial candidate, all BJP men have
surrendered in front of Modi. If party looses LS election, you all will be
responsible for the defeat.

BJP undemocratic approach cause him to low down their popularity, in our
parliamentary system people choose their MP, and MP elect their PM. But
BJP announced his PM candidate before results. This really disastrous
for Democracy.

Wll said Jaitley Ji, BJP is very less popular due to its dirty politics,
and Modi more popular due to his Salesmanship.

Sir,Indeed Article 370,which confers a special Status on J&K had always been danger to
Union of India. If 370 had not not been in force,un rest problems in J&K and Wars with
Pakistan could have been averted.Unfortunately, over years it has been made out to be a
sacrosanct provision.Only BJP has got guts to speak about 370.Congress never speak about
it because of losing power fear due to Muslim negative votes.Congress common slogans are
minority appeasement,Secularism&Garibi Hattao. However, due to minority support only
Congress has been surviving since 1947.They are so confident to capture Power again
because of minority support but not of Hindu votes support. So,Home Ministry openly
supported to Muslim Community by writing letters to States to release Muslim Youth who are
languishing in Jails. It is Policy of Congress,It was because of this,Cast factor has been
emerged. When no No Party start to speak about minority, then onwards Cast Politics would
be diminishing.

Jaitley never said " Modi more popular than party". You are paraphrasing him FALSELY. This paper should not be called The Hindu, it should be called The Anti-Hindu.

Of course you will not publish my comment.

Oh come on Tiwari, Providing 24 hour electricity to the villages
in Gujarat is not pampering the capitalists. Yes it does help the
rural poverty struck communities to produce commodities which
enrich the middlemen and eventually the capitalists. The fact
cannot be forgotten that employment in the manufacturing sector is
possible only with huge investments.WE as a nation, and you the
Congress have totally forgotten the Gram Vikas promoted
b y Mahatma Gandhi. If only Nehru , had allowed the private sector
to provide hydro electric generation on the west flowing rivers,
we would havehad a surplus power in the country as a whole.
Highly erudite people like Manish Tiwari must desist from cheap
propaganda for the Congress party whose image is almost in total
eclipse with the scores of scams indulged in by the powers that
be.

Modi's popularity has till now been a successful advertising campaign of
the BJP and few vested interests. Been following his rallies which seems
a congregation for Congress bashing by BJP leaders. Those people coming
there have got their entertainment by war of flavored words from one
leader to another and nothing else. A future PM must make such a speech
every time with all sincere intention, with contents that must leave the
audience with beliefs of a better future tomorrow. Modiji, for
entertainment we have the Khans.

I have to agree with Jaitley. Without Modi as the PM candidate, BJP
would have floundered as the tired and lacklustre opposition going
through the motions without passion or conviction.
