What Prime Minister Narendra Modi would say this Independence Day from the ramparts of the Red Fort was a cipher, but that it would be shorter than his speech last year (a marathon 96 minutes) was something that the country had his word on.

Mr. Modi had promised that he would try and keep this year’s speech within the 50-minute time frame. He managed to keep it to 56 minutes.
