Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is divisive, delusional and desperate and the BJP was virtually dragged by the RSS leadership into rubber-stamping his anointment as a prime ministerial candidate, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said on Sunday.
“BJP leaders and the party were sulking on the issue. But the RSS leadership virtually dragged them into rubber-stamping the decision. This shows who runs the show and from where,’’ the Minister said in a statement here.
Mr. Sharma said the Chief Minister had never shown any grace or dignity in political discourse. “Humility has never touched him and he has dragged political discourse to very low depths. He has been addressing public rallies from a dais designed as the replica of the Red Fort (in Ambikapur) and Parliament (in Ahmedabad). That shows that he is delusional, and desperate and I can say that with certainty that he will always be speaking from the ramparts of replicas and not from the real Red Fort and [will] not address the real Parliament that is for sure because that misfortune will never visit people of India.’’
Referring to the Muzaffarnagar communal violence, Mr. Sharma said the riots were shocking. “It is shocking. There are forces at work who want to create a sectarian divide by injecting the poison of communalism for electoral gains by polarising society. We would urge all communities and all sections to see through their evil designs and maintain unity and harmony.’’
Mr. Sharma termed the controversial remark of one of the defence lawyers in the December 16 gang rape case as “outrageous.” It deserved to be condemned. The Bar Council of India should take action against the lawyer. “By uttering such things, he has assaulted the dignity of a noble profession. Justice has to be done and justice has been delivered.’’
Lawyer A.P. Singh courted trouble with his remarks that he would have burnt alive his daughter had she been moving around at night with a boyfriend.
The Delhi Bar Council has taken a serious view of the comment of Mr. Singh, lawyer for two of the convicts, after it received many complaints from NGOs and other organisations condemning his statement.
