Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked party MPs to take up three causes relating to welfare of the poor, social harmony and good governance as part of a “sankalp yatra” or pledge march between August 15-30 with the deadline for completion of these tasks by 2022, in time for the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.
On the lines of the ‘Tiranga Yatra’ taken out by party MPs last year, Prime Minister Modi asked his party men to hold a 15-day long ‘sankalp yatra’ (journey for pledge) from Independence Day with the above three causes “so that there is an improved quality of life for people in all parts of the country by 2022 when the country would celebrate 75 years of freedom,” Mr. Ananth Kumar said.
“Prime Minister Modi said India had attained new heights in 70 years since 1947 when it gained Independence and it was certain to emerge as a strong power in the world by 2022,” he added.
The phases of India’s Independence struggle were explained by Prime Minister Modi as following two tranches, between 1857 (the first war of Independence) and 1942 (when Quit India was launched) and from 1942-1947 (from Quit India to Independence). “He asked party leaders to organise programmes on August 9 to mark the 75th anniversary of Quit India,” said Mr. Kumar.
Condemns Cong. leaders
Mr. Kumar said the parliamentary party also condemned those Congress members who had thrown papers towards the Chair in the Lok Sabha yesterday. Six Congress MPs were suspended for five working days of Parliament on Monday by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also briefed MPs on the progress of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) saying that there were many rumours about the tax regime and that it was important therefore to understand the matter. He also said that officials of the revenue department will be present in the Parliament library building between 3-6 p.m. for the entire monsoon session to dispel any doubts of MPs about the GST regime.
