Modest turnout for Bengali films in Kolkata: CII survey

‘Only 54 per cent of respondents in Kolkata had been to a cinema hall to watch a Bengali film in the past year’

December 14, 2014 11:46 pm | Updated 11:46 pm IST - KOLKATA:

A new survey on viewership of Bengali films reveals that about 54 per cent of the sample population in Kolkata had not visited a cinema in the past one year to watch a Bengali film, despite the proliferation of multiplexes.

The survey — “Bengal bioscope: a big picture outlook for sustainable growth” — was conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and market research and survey firm IMRB, a CII release said. The study was released during a two-day film summit here. The survey found that in the districts, around two-thirds of the sample population visited theatres last year to watch a Bengali film, but the annual frequency of visits was restricted to just three films.
