October 24, 2009 08:50 pm | Updated 08:50 pm IST - Bolangir:

A mob on Saturday set ablaze a police station and six vehicles after a student was crushed to death by a police van here.

Police said an engineering student identified as Shakti Prasad Mohanty was hit by a police van while he was returning from college on a motorcycle and died on way to hospital.

As the news of his death spread, students of the college took to the streets engaging in violence in which locals also joined.

In the process, the mob torched four stationary trucks of a private aluminium company and two buses, including one belonging to the state-run OSRTC. They also damaged some shops.

As police remained mute spectator to the violence, they set ablaze the town police station. No policeman, however, was injured. Damage to property was being ascertained, police said.
