MLAs get extortion notes from ULFA faction

December 05, 2012 11:49 pm | Updated June 13, 2016 02:04 am IST - Guwahati:

The Paresh Barua-led faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has sent extortion notes to sitting Congress legislator from Sadiya Assembly constituency Bolin Chetia and sitting Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Doom Dooma Assembly constituency Dilip Moran, asking them to pay the militant outfit Rs. 20 lakh each.

Assam Police have claimed to have traced the calls, made by a leader of the outfit to the two legislators asking them to pay up or face consequences, to a location outside the State.

“We have traced the calls outside the State and are on the job. We have reviewed the security measures and initiated steps accordingly,” Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S.N. Singh told The Hindu .

Earlier in October, the ULFA faction demanded Rs. 30 lakh from Debabrata Saikia, a sitting Congress MLA from Nazira Assembly constituency in upper Assam’s Sivasagar district, and threatened to cause harm to his business and his family. Mr. Saikia is the eldest son of the former Assam Chief Minister, Hiteswar Saikia.
