Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Girija Vyas launched the Housing Start Up Index (HSUI) logo, web site and monitoring tool called Integrated Urban Poverty Monitoring System for the Rajiv Awas Yojana here on Wednesday.

The HSUI is a joint initiative of the Ministry’s National Building Organisation and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). “The HSUI is an index that tracks the number of houses being constructed every year across the country. The Housing and Construction related activities in our country, with its backward and forward linkages and with nearly 254 ancillary industries has a huge multiplier effect on the economy. HSUI is a leading indicator of the national economy itself,” Dr. Vyas said. The results of the pilot index will be released in the coming weeks. “The RBI has started working on a pilot for 25 cities, which will have the index ready in the coming weeks. Information on six lakh buildings, covering all stages of construction will be collected and presented to the RBI,” said a Ministry official.
