Militants on Monday made an abortive attempt to target a security picket with a grenade in Sopore town of North Kashmir.

Unidentified militants hurled a grenade towards the CRPF picket at the entrance of the State Bank of India building in the main town, 55 kms from here in Baramulla district, Monday morning, official sources said.

They said the grenade failed to explode and was later defused by a bomb disposal squad.

Police, assisted by the CRPF, cordoned off the whole area and conducted a search operation but no one was arrested, the sources said.

Sopore has witnessed a spurt in militant activities since December last year, prompting authorities to declare it as a separate police district recently.
