Police and security forces have rushed to Kongkan village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, where militants of the People’s Liberation Army, a wing of the Revolutionary People’s Front, attacked an Assam Rifles camp on Saturday. While the PLA claimed that it killed six personnel and smashed two barracks, the police, quoting Assam Rifles, said only a jawan was injured and one barrack damaged. Tribal villagers told reporters on Sunday that they could hear the sound of gunfire and bomb explosions for more than one hour. For fear of being caught in the crossfire, they said, they stayed the whole night in mountains.
