A MiG-27 fighter aircraft crashed in a residential area close to the Jodhpur Air Base on Monday.

The aircraft, which was on a routine training mission, went down about 5 km from the base and the pilot ejected safely, sources in the Air Force said.

The pilot had reported a technical problem and sought priority landing. However, as the engine failed, he had to eject, the sources said.

The area has been cordoned off and police have reached the spot.

ACP Jodhpur (West) Sima Hingonia said a portion of a house where the plane crashed was damaged. A court of Inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
