Meeting on September 4 to elect new GTA head

August 26, 2013 12:38 am | Updated 12:38 am IST - KOLKATA:

The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) sent letters to its elected Sabha members on Sunday asking them to participate in a meeting of the regional autonomous body called on September 4 to elect a new chief executive. The post fell vacant following the resignation of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung.

“We have sent letters to the GTA Sabha members. The letters are being delivered by the district administration. For those in the prison, the letters are being handed over by the correctional home authorities,” GTA principal secretary R.D. Meena told The Hindu .

The GJM leadership that had put a condition — of release of the arrested GTA members — to participate in the meeting, said it had not received any response from the State government so far. GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said at least 10 elected GTA members had been arrested since the start of the fresh round of agitation.

Mr. Gurung on Saturday ruled out attending the meeting stating that his aim was to achieve Gorkhaland.

Stir continues

Meanwhile, life remained paralysed in the Darjeeling hills as the GJM’s agitation in protest against the arrest of party workers continued.
