The Haryana government has decided to set up the largest medical university of the State in Karnal, the home town of famous U.S. astronaut Kalpana Chawla, one of its most celebrated daughters.
Announcing this, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Saturday that Kalpana Chawla Medical University would come up on a 100 acre plot that has been donated by the panchayat of Kutail village in Karnal district. The director of Kalpana Chawla Medical College will present next month a concept paper on the university, which will provide all modern and quality medical services.
The construction of the medical college is already under way.
Various medical colleges, nursing colleges and dental colleges will be affiliated to the university. In Karnal itself, one medical college of 200 seats, a 750-1,000 bedded hospital, a dental college and some medical institutes will be set up in coordination with the Central government.
Mr. Khattar said while work on the university would be completed in the next four-five years, the Kalpana Chawla Medical College and Hospital would be completed at a cost of Rs. 645 crore by 2015. So far, a sum of Rs. 143 crore has been spent on it.
