Medals for 948 police personnel

Three Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were awarded the top honour of the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) and seven others Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) for thwarting terrorist attacks at Indian Consulates at Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad in Afghanistan early this year.

A total of 948 Central and State forces police personnel were on Sunday awarded gallantry and other service medals on the eve of Independence Day.

One PPMG was given to CRPF Inspector Gulam Nabi Bhat and an official of the Intelligence Bureau and three policemen from Telangana for undertaking daring operations.

The Central Reserve Police Force was decorated with the highest of these bravery medals at 44, mostly for their operations in the Left Wing Extremism-affected States.

The list of bravehearts also included three Home Guard jawans who laid down their lives in the line of duty during the terrorist attack in Punjab’s Dinanagar police station on July 27 last year.

The officers involved in the probe of the AgustaWestland helicopter scam besides those securing successful prosecution of the former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala were among 31 CBIofficers awarded the President’s Police Medal and Police Medal.

Ashwani Kumar Chand, an IPS officer of the 2000 batch from the Sikkim cadre, part of the Special Investigation Team of the CBI probing cases like the AgustaWestland scam and the Vijay Mallya loan default cases was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Atul Hajela, DSP in the Anti-Corruption Branch of the agency, involved in the probe against the Principal Secretary to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Rajendra Kumar, was honoured with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Vijay Kumar Shukla, presently DSP in the special crime unit of the agency, who probed the Badaun suicide case, was given the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

The BSF secured 62 medals which include 10 Police Medals for Gallantry including 3 posthumously, six President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service and 46 Police Medals for Meritorious Service. Six NDRF personnel were awarded Police Medals. Surjeet Singh Guleria, DIG, NDRF was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, while Satish Kumar Sastri, Mahasher Hussain, S. Raghvendra, Suresh Kumar Yadav, and Bhawani Singh Rathore, were conferred the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) secured 31 police medals.

Fourteen Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel were also awarded police medals.
