A preliminary report submitted to the government by West Bengal CID on Saturday said ‘a mechanical failure' seemed to be the reason behind a truck hitting a car in the convoy of Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as she was returning from Lalgarh on August 9.
The Trinamool Congress leadership had alleged that it was an attempt on Ms. Banerjee's life by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Party MP Suvendu Adhikary had filed a case of attempt to murder against the truck-driver.
The case was given to the CID and the truck driver, Gurjant Singh, has been in police custody since.
Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh said the report was based on investigations into the initial case of rash and negligent driving lodged against the driver.
“A mechanical examination of the truck by the police revealed that its brakes failed and this resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle and hitting a car in the convoy. We are still awaiting the report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory,” Mr. Singh said, adding that investigations on the complaint of attempt to murder were continuing.
