The Samajwadi Party hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday for demanding trifurcation of the State into three smaller States of Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western U.P. It said if the Chief Minister was finding it difficult to rule the State then she should quit.
In a statement here, the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Shivpal Singh Yadav, said the people of the three regions did not demand separate states but the Chief Minister was playing politics by demanding it herself. He said unlike the popular notion that administration would be streamlined, the creation of smaller states posed administrative problems. The problems between Punjab and Haryana were yet to be solved and Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala were locked in a dispute over sharing of water, Mr. Yadav said.
He said the former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh was opposed to creation of smaller states as their development and administrative management were virtually impossible. The growth rate of Uttarakhand from 2005-06 to 2007-08 was very low as compared to other states, he added, and similar was the case with Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
