March 23, 2013 01:42 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:11 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Upon returning to India on Friday, the Italian marines facing trial for shooting and killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast on Friday presented themselves before the police at South Avenue police post in Chanakyapuri here.

They had been permitted by the Supreme Court to visit Italy to cast their votes in the February 22 national elections.

“Accompanied by Italian Embassy officials, the two [marines] — Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone — reached the police station around 7.45 p.m. following the set procedures for foreigners visiting India. After completing the formalities, they would go back to the Embassy,” said a police officer. Earlier, the Italian government’s refusal to send them to face trial in the case had triggered a diplomatic row.

The Supreme Court had permitted them to visit Italy to cast their votes following a promise by the Italian government that they would return to India to face trial in the case.
