Suspected Maoists triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) blast targeting security personnel near Lalgarh in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district on Saturday.
Luckily no one was injured in the blast.
Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Verma told The Hindu that the police had prior information that an IED had been planted at Bamal village near Lalgarh.
"Security forces went to the area and located the IED. But while they were cordoning off the area to defuse it, the miscreants triggered a blast and fled from the spot," Mr. Verma said.
He said that since the wire attached to the IED was about 600 metres long, the miscreants could not be identified or arrested, adding that the needle of suspicion pointed to the Maoists.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. and coincided with Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit to Jhargram.
