Maoists kill JMM leader in Jharkhand

Maoists on Tuesday night shot dead a leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in Simdega district of Jharkhand.

“Birsa Badaik, Block President of JMM, was gunned down by a 15-member Maoist squad led by its self-styled commander Jageshwar alias Debu near his residence at Nava village in Bano police station,” Sub-divisional Police Officer Barun Kumar told PTI .

Maoist guerrillas reached Baidaik’s house around 8 pm and surrounded it, he said, adding that the ultras shot him when he tried to escape from his residence.

Police have started raids in the area, he said.

In a separate incident, a Maoist training camp was destroyed and 10 landmines seized on Tuesday following a gunfight between Maoist guerrillas and security personnel using Indian Air Force helicopters at West Singhbhum district of the State.

“A Maoist training camp was destroyed and 10 landmines were seized during the operations at extremist-hit Bandgaon,” DIG (Kolhan) Manoj Mishra told PTI .

A huge quantity of articles used for explosive making, wires, food stuff, blankets were seized and Maoist cadre fled the area, he said.

Apart from the district police, 14 companies of para-military forces were pressed into the operation backed with aerial support by two IAF choppers, Mr. Mishra said.
