Four CPI (M) supporters, including a school teacher, were killed by suspected Maoists within a span of less than 24 hours in West Midnapore district’s Lalgarh where joint security forces are on an anti-Maoist operation since June 19.

Kartick Mahato (38), a teacher in Jamda High School at Belatikri in Lalgrah, was shot dead this morning by six to seven motorcycle-borne extremists after barging into the classroom when he was taking a class. They even took away his motorbike.

A few minutes later, CPI(M)’s Salbani Branch office local committee secretary Sambhu Mahato was shot along with one of his associate Anadi Mahato while they were sitting in a roadside tea-stall at Burikarli allegedly by the extremists, the police said.

While Sambhu, a resident of remote Guripal village, died on the spot, his associate died in a local hospital.

Last evening, suspected Maoists killed Sheikh Bakul, a shop-keeper and CPI(M) worker, at Aandaria bazaar in Binpur where he had gone to buy medicine.

The Maoists also allegedly kidnapped three other CPI(M) workers from Bankura, but their whereabouts were yet to be known.
