The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued an alert to the West Bengal government to step up security for key political leaders, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in the wake of the attack by Maoists in Chhattisgarh on May 25 where senior Congress leaders were killed.

It directed the State government to strengthen the security of the former Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy, among others. According to it, the Maoists may target prominent political leaders.

The MHA said the leaders should be cautious while visiting areas where the Maoists have a strong presence. Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee confirmed here on Tuesday that the State government had received the alert.
