Manmohan, Monti discuss marines issue

At a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Italian counterpart, Mario Monti, the fate of the two Italian marines set to face trial in a Kerala court for the shooting death of two fishermen off the Indian coast figured prominently.

Italy respects judicial process

Mr. Monti told Dr. Singh that the Italian side respected the judicial process, Indian officials told reporters.

“What he wanted is that within the framework of law, in the future, to take forward their concerns, for instance on the nature of imprisonment,” a senior official said, regretting that he could not be more specific because this part of the conversation between the two leaders was in the nature of a ‘tête-à-tête.'
