Nongthongbam Ajoy, son of N. Biren, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister, will face criminal trial on a charge of shooting to death a youth, Irom Rozer, on March 20 last.

The Central Bureau of Investigation filed a charge sheet in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, who, in turn, ordered Sessions Judge, Manipur East Court, to proceed with the trial.

Reports said that the court proceedings will start on March 16.

The government handed over the case to the CBI since the father of the accused is a Minister.

Four accomplices of Nongthongbam Ajoy were also arrested and interrogated.

However, the CBI, not finding any evidence of their involvement in the crime, submitted that they may be set free.

The CBI investigating officer of the Anti-Corruption Branch, R.K. Amarwal, said during the festival of colours on March 20, two groups of youth in two cars were allegedly teasing two girls on a two-wheeler near the Imphal airport. There was a skirmish between the groups.

The charge sheet said that Ajoy whipped out his licensed M-20 pistol and shot dead Rozer who was driving the other car.
