In a shocking incident, a woman was grievously injured by her husband after she gave birth to a second girl child, at Ramagarh under Buguda police station limits in Ganjam district.
Agitated over the birth of the girl child, Narayan allegedly tried to slit the throat of Binodini.
Binodini was admitted to the Bhanjanagar hospital where she was stated to be out of danger.
Narayan is at large and a manhunt has been launched for him.
According to the police, Narayan worked in Surat.
Villagers said Narayan, who came to the village on Sunday, had an altercation with his wife over the birth of the girl child.
He thrashed Binodini and also tried to slit her throat.
Inspector in charge of Buguda police station Susant Sethi said from preliminary investigation it emerged that that Narayan also suspected the fidelity of his wife.
Binodini had married Narayan around three years ago. The couple has a two-year-old daughter.
Around three weeks ago, Binodini had given birth to the second girl child.
Incidents such as this are not uncommon in rural areas of Ganjam district. On September 7, a one-week-old girl child deserted by her parents was rescued by Berhampur Childline from Jamarada under Jagananthprasad police station limits in Ganjam district.
This month Childline activists rescued another girl child whose mother had allegedly tried to sell her off to a couple in the city.
In July, a woman had died of internal injuries allegedly caused by female foeticide attempt by a quack after her in-laws came to know from an ultrasound clinic that she was carrying a girl child.
