The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Javed Hasan on Friday for allegedly killing Asma Javed, a former student leader of Aligarh Muslim University. Asma was found dead in mysterious circumstances in her apartment in Aligarh on Wednesday.

At a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police J. Ravinder Gaud told presspersons that Javed Hasan, 35, a property dealer, killed Asma, his live-in partner, after they fought over money on May 8.

Asma was enrolled for a teachers’ training course in the nearby town of Hathras. The police had taken Javed into preventive custody on Thursday considering him the “prime suspect” as he was the last person to be seen with Asma. “Javed has confessed to killing Asma. They fought over money. Javed wanted Asma to blackmail Akram, a famous businessman in Aligarh, against whom Asma had filed a case for rape on pretext of marriage but withdrawn it after they settled the issue out of court,” Mr. Gaud said.

“After our interrogation, Javed told us that he wanted Asma to take more money from Akram and give it to him — which she didn’t do. Moreover, during the fight on May 8, Asma slapped him after which he killed her in a fit of anger,” he said.
