Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday said the death of Ram Singh, prime accused in the Delhi gang-rape case, inside Tihar jail clearly pointed towards a “major security lapse” and that action would be taken against prison authorities once the judicial probe report was received.
“There is a major security lapse...Preliminary inquiry suggests he committed suicide. However, we will wait for the enquiry to be completed,” he told journalists here. Refusing to comment on the allegations made by Ram Singh’s family that his murder was part of a bigger conspiracy, Mr. Shinde said the judicial probe would throw light on all such charges.
“I cannot come to any conclusion at this moment whether it is a suicide or not before inquiry reports are out. It is a grave incident…Let us all wait for the report,” he observed.
Mr. Shinde also said it has been decided to review security inside the jail complex following the inmate’s death.
Tihar Jail Director General Vimla Mehra was summoned to the North Block immediately after the news of Ram Singh’s death came in.
