The family of the slain Chhattisgarh Congress leader, Mahendra Karma, met Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde here on Friday and sought security in view of persistent threats to their lives from Maoists.
Karma’s wife Devki, accompanied by her four sons and Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, informed Mr. Shinde that Maoists had repeatedly asked them to leave their ancestral place or face severe consequences.
Naxal threat
“We want security. Naxals have asked us to leave our ancestral place in Bastar and warned of dire consequences if we do not follow their diktat,” Deepak, one of Karma’s sons, told journalists after the meeting.
Mr. Shinde assured the family of all help, he said.
Home Secretary R.K. Singh and Intelligence Bureau Director Asif Ibrahim attended the meeting.
Mahendra Karma and some other Congress leaders were among the 26 people killed by Maoists last month near Bastar while they were returning from a rally.
