The saffron party's estranged partner Shiv Sena, which is emerging as the second largest party, has given clear indications that it is willing to patch up and if that happens, they would have two-third majority in the Assembly.

Ms. Jindal, who was elected from Hisar in 2005 and 2009 and is a minister in the outgoing Bhupinder Singh Hooda—led Congress government in the state, lost to BJP candidate Kamal Gupta by 13,646 votes.

2.57 pm: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan accepts responsibility for Congress' defeat.

"No party has received complete majority. BJP has emerged as the largest party and I congratulate them. The Congress' performance has been disappointing. There were certain improvements after Lok Sabha elections, but they were not sufficient. I take responsibility of my party's defeat. We will work as a positive opposition, and will work for strengthening the party," he tells reporters at Karad South.

2.52 pm: BJP senior leader L.K. Advani says BJP's alliance with Shiv Sena should not have been severed. He rules out alliance with NCP.

"I want to see BJP government in Maharashtra. Our alliance with Shiv Sena was 25 years old, and it should not have been broken. But I am happy with the results that have come in. I hope that the old association with Sena is restored now. There is no question of allying with NCP," Mr. Advani tells reporters.

2:25 pm: BJP retained the Rajkot-West Assembly seat by winning the bye-election with a margin of over 23,000 votes.

“BJP candidate Vijay Rupani won Rajkot-West Assembly seat by a margin of 23,740 votes at the end of the final 19th round,” Deputy Election Officer Ketan Gandhi.

2:00 pm: As per the Election Commission till 1 PM, out of total 90 seats, BJP has won eight and was leading comfortably on 43 others, Congress bagged three and leading in 11, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won three and leading in 18 while its ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had won one.

Independents bagged one seat and were leading in four others while Haryana Janhit Congress is leading in two seats.

1:53 pm: Ruling Congress’ sitting MLA from Rai Assembly segment in Sonepat district, Haryana, Jai Tirath Dahiya won by a thin margin of three votes defeating his nearest rival of the Indian National Lok Dal.

1.47 pm: In Alibaug constituency, Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) candidate Pandit Patil defeated his nearest rival Mahendra Dalvi of Shiv Sena by over 12,000 votes. Baglan seat was won by NCP’s Dipika Sanjay Chavan by a close margin of 4,181 votes.

1.45 pm: BJP’s Dilip Kamble won the Pune cantonment seat by defeating sitting Congress MLA Ramesh Bagwe by 14,955 votes. Bharat Gogavale of Shiv Sena won the Mahad seat in Raigad by defeating Congress’ Manik Jagtap by over 19,000 votes.
