The farmers “mahapanchayat” of the Congress will be held in Aligarh on July 9 and will be addressed by the party general secretary and Amethi MP, Rahul Gandhi. The Aligarh district administration had earlier refused permission for the farmers' rally, following which the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee had petitioned the Bulandshahr district magistrate.

The chief spokesperson of the UP Congress, Subodh Srivastava said in a press release that the mahapanchayat will be held in Aligarh's Numaish Maidan. Apart from Mr. Gandhi, the event would be attended by senior party leaders from the State and the central ministers. The spokesperson said the Congress was determined to hold the mahapanchayat on July 9.

Earlier, permission for the meeting to be held in Bhatta-Parsaul in Greater Noida had been denied by the Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) district administration citing security concerns.

Mr. Srivastava said following the persistence of the Congress, the Aligarh district administration finally agreed to allow the rally. The farmers' mahapanchayat was being billed as the Congress's show of strength in western Uttar Pradesh.
