As the CBI readies to take over the investigation into the multi-crore Vyapam scam, a top examination body in Madhya Pradesh on Friday postponed the exam for admission to private dental and medical colleges which was to take place on Sunday.

The development is significant because the Dental and Medical Admission Test (DMAT) conducted by the Association of Private Dental and Medical Colleges (APDMC) has become controversial over the past few weeks. A batch of petitions in the Jabalpur High Court allege that there were serious irregularities in the exam.

The APDMC conducts DMAT for admission to nearly 50% of the seats in private medical and dental colleges.

Another scam? Dr. Anand Rai, one of the key whistle-blowers in the Vyapam case, had also filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI probe into the alleged DMAT scam. He claimed that several members of the State’s judiciary were beneficiaries as they had got their children admitted to private colleges by paying bribes.

In an interim order on Thursday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed scanning of the Optical Mark Recognition or OMR answer sheets of candidates sitting for the DMAT exam at the centres itself immediately after the test to prevent foul play. Following the court’s order, the APDMC postponed the exam. “It was postponed because of technical reasons,” APDMC Chairman V.K. Mahadik told PTI.
