Thambidurai elected LS deputy speaker

Leader of the AIADMK in Parliament, M. Thambidurai began his second stint as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha after being unanimously elected for the position on Wednesday.

The motion to appoint Dr. Thambidurai was moved by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and seconded by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj supporting him. He was declared elected after a voice vote amid thumping of desks from both sides.

This is the second time that Dr. Thambidurai will occupy the post after 11 parties supported his nomination. He served as the Deputy Speaker between 1985 and 1989.

A senior AIADMK leader, Dr. Thambidurai represents Karur constituency in Tamil Nadu. He had served as the Cabinet Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs and as the Minister of State of Surface Transport from March 1998 to April 1999. Thambidurai was first elected as a Member of Parliament to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984 from Dharmapuri and was subsequently elected to the 9th Lok Sabha, 12th Lok Sabha, 15th Lok Sabha and 16th Lok Sabha.
