Lucky escape for Manipur python

April 30, 2012 11:18 pm | Updated 11:18 pm IST - IMPHAL:

In Manipur, where no reptile or wild animal caught by hunters is safe, a 16-foot long python, seized by tribals in a mountain stream in Churachandpur district on April 26, has been rescued.

Almost immobile

It is said the 28-kg python had just swallowed a goat and was almost immobile, when it was caught by the hunters.

Logger L. Sarat, who came to know of the incident, reported the matter to the Loktak police, fearing that it would be slaughtered. Station officer N. Duidang rushed to the spot and rescued the reptile.

It was later handed over to the Iroishemba zoo, which already has two pythons.
