Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said on Sunday that the Lokpal Bill would be passed in Parliament without discussion.

“Yes, the [Lokpal] Bill will be passed... without discussion,” Mr. Abdullah told reporters on the sidelines of a Golf Tournament in Sidhra belt on the outskirts of Jammu.

“People have been waiting for a Lokpal for long. If there is a controlling mechanism, it is a good thing,” he said.

Asked if any amendments had been made, he said: “If there is an amendment, then it will come back to the Lok Sabha. There it will take place [will be passed].”

The Lokpal Bill, in an amended form after consideration by the Select Committee, was brought back to the Rajya Sabha for consideration but there could not be any discussion due to the opposition from Samajwadi Party members.

The new Bill also grants powers to the ombudsman to sanction prosecution against public servants.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has also appealed to political parties to set aside their differences to ensure the Bill’s passage to fight corruption.
