As it happened: Lok Sabha passes bill to replace NEET ordinance; AIADMK walks out

NEET was brought to end multiplicity of exams and exploitation and to usher in free and fair process in medical admissions, says Health Minister.

The Lok Sabha is discussing the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance and Dentists (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016, pertaining to NEET.

The Rajya Sabha discussed the Calling Attention on situation arising due to floods in the country.

The BJD and the JD(U) demanded a separate Ministry to deal with natural calamities like flood and drought, even as they sought a more pro-active approach by the Centre in releasing funds to the affected States.

Participating in the discussion,several leaders also questioned the official data on damages caused in the calamities and sought steps to put in place a warning system for floods and cloudbursts.

Responding to the members, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju admitted that 196 people had lost their lives, 2,184 cattle perished and 38,285 houses and huts damaged besides 0.357 lakh hectares of crop area damaged this year due to floods.

He, however, said the primary responsibility to deal with natural calamities lies with the State government concerned.

The Rajya Sabha also discussed the Child Labour (Protection and Regulation) Amendment Bill.

Tamil Nadu government is supporting “what we are trying to do,” he said, adding that “we have already decided that whatever land is available, we are setting up a memorial for which foundation will be laid. On 27th, we are going ahead with the programme on the land already in our possession.
